After Halloween, your kids happily bring home
buckets and pillowcases full of candy, most of which are blanketed in a thick
chocolate coating. You’ve done your post-Halloween due diligence and checked
their candy hauls for anything suspicious, and found a way to distribute their
chocolaty treats throughout the upcoming months so they don’t eat it all in
one night.
One thing you didn’t plan for were the
chocolate stains, and not just what gets on their hands and face. All those new
clothes you bought for their back to school wardrobe? Some of them are already
dirty, stained with chocolate from Halloween night.
Is it possible to clean these clothes and save
yourself money and heartache? Fortunately, with a few simple steps you can
remove chocolate stains from washable fabrics.
- Scrape
off excess chocolate, but do so carefully. You don’t want to rub chocolate
deeper in the fibers of the clothes.
- Flush
the back of the stained clothing with cold water or soda water. This
loosens the chocolate particles.
- Rub
laundry detergent or liquid dishwashing detergent into the stain, so it
saturates the fabric.
- Soak
the clothes in cold water for 15 minutes, gently rubbing the stain every
3-5 minutes. Continue doing this and rinsing the garment until the stain
is gone. You may need to apply more detergent for a stubborn stain.
- If
the stain remains, use a commercial stain remover.
- Wash
as usual in the washing machine, and the stain should be gone. If not,
repeat steps 2-5. Check to see if the stain is gone before drying or
ironing.
You need no longer fear the dreaded chocolate
stain. It can easily be removed in a few simple steps, returning clothes to
their former glory.
