Losing sleep over your mattress? Maybe it’s
because your mattress is lumpy, bumpy or old.
Or maybe it’s because you’re stressing over how
to find a new mattress. Where do you start? How much time should you research
before going to a store? Can you lie down on a floor-model mattress?
Worry no more! These handy hints will help you
select the best mattress.
1. Mattress age
It’s
important to know how old your mattress is. A good trick is if your mattress is
over 8 years old, it’s time to buy a new one. It also depends on your
personal preference. If you’re restless or waking up in pain, you should
consider a new mattress.
2. Type of mattress
This also varies from person to person. There are a few common
choices on the market which fulfill a variety of needs for sleepers of all
kinds: hybrids, latex, memory foam, coils, pillow-top and adjustable. Whatever
you choose, it’s important to research each type beforehand.
3. Set a budget
4. Firm or soft?
Firmness is highly subjective. Test out mattresses in the store.
Sit, lay down and move around a little. There’s a level of firmness specific to
you and your body type.
5. Sleep position
Do you sleep on your side, stomach or back? Or do you go through
different positions throughout the night? Certain styles of mattresses (see #2)
conform to the shape of your body.
